| The ideal race is run at a constant speed. Running very fast at the beginning and slower towards the end is typical of most runners. However, a faster time can be run by being consistent through out the race. The above percentages show how far off you were from running a constant speed through out the entire race. | ||||||||||||||
| The percentages are calculated by dividing your average race speed into the difference of your average speed for the mile segment and the race average speed. This percentage (or variance) for each segment is added together to get the 'Total Variance'. | ||||||||||||||
| If a runner ran a 6:04, 6:20, and a 7:13 then the average time would be = 6:20. The variance for the first mile would be (6:20- 6:04)/6:20 = 4.1%. The second and third segments would be 0% and 14.1%. The total equals 18.2% variance from "Flat Splits". | ||||||||||||||
| Any percentage under 10% is GOOD. Under 5% is EXTREMELY GOOD. 0% is PERFECT!! | ||||||||||||||
| These Calculations do not take into account the terrain of the race course. A segment with more up hill will be slower for EVERYONE on the course. | ||||||||||||||
| The individual percentages for each segment can be found on the page for that particular race. | ||||||||||||||
